A Conceptually New Approach

Regula 1120M is a mobile document authenticator designed to work with any smartphone, attaching to the device and connecting via a wireless interface.

It brings professional-grade document authenticity verification into field operations using controlled illumination (UV/IR/white) and RFID chip reading, powered by Regula’s software-driven verification scenarios.

  • “Smartphone-as-a-professional-tool” model: the smartphone becomes the core platform for mobile verification workflows, not just a camera.

  • Policy-friendly deployment: agencies and enterprises can use smartphones already approved or in service, aligning deployments with local security rules and procurement policies.

Choose Your Smartphone Strategy

Depending on your security policies, internal device approval requirements, and the smartphones already in service, you can select the solution that best matches your operational workflow: Regula 1120M with any standard smartphone without an IR camera, Regula 1120M with any specialized smartphone equipped with an IR camera, or Regula 7320 — a fully integrated mobile workstation with a built-in smartphone featuring an IR camera. Compare the three options below.

Document Reading and Verification

Regula 1120M automatically identifies document type and origin using the Regula Document Reader SDK. With 16,000+ templates from 254 countries and support for 138+ languages and scripts, it enables fast and consistent identity verification.

Image сapturing

Regula 1120M pairs with a smartphone and uses controlled UV/IR/white illumination to capture consistent document images in a mobile workflow. Optimized color rendering delivers high-quality UV images even in ambient light, while enhanced processing helps reduce IR overexposure. IR-based automated checks require a smartphone with an IR camera.

MRZ reading

Regula 1120M, powered by Regula Document Reader SDK, automatically locates the machine-readable zone (MRZ) and extracts its data with built-in validation to minimize manual input. For additional authenticity checks, MRZ print contrast in IR is available when the paired smartphone is equipped with an IR camera.

Visual Zone OCR (VIZ)

Regula 1120M, powered by Regula Document Reader SDK, automatically recognizes information from textual fields: name, surname, expiration date, etc., divides them into separate fields, and verifies date of issue and expiration date.

Check the full software specification for more details.

RFID reading

Regula 1120M reads data from contactless RFID chips—supporting both textual and graphical information—using multiple access modes (direct, BAC, PACE, EAC). It also supports authenticity checks and digital signature verification to ensure the chip is not cloned or tampered with.

DTC reading

Verify Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) with Regula 1120M using Regula software workflows designed for ICAO standards compliance. Streamline clearance processes and confirm eligibility to enter a destination before boarding—directly from a mobile verification workstation.

Barcode reading

Barcode reading

Automatically capture and validate data from multiple barcode formats—1D, PDF417, QR, and Aztec—as part of the Regula 1120M mobile workflow. The extracted information can then be cross-verified with the MRZ, VIZ, and—if present—the RFID chip to maximize data integrity.

Enhanced UV/IR Image Processing

Regula 1120M uses optimized color rendering to capture high-quality UV images in normal ambient lighting, approaching laboratory-grade clarity. When paired with a smartphone equipped with an IR camera, an additional processing algorithm helps prevent IR overexposure, improving the reliability of IR-based checks. Together, these improvements enable automated document authenticity verification in the field at a level comparable to a stationary inspection workstation—using a smartphone as the control unit.

Enhanced UV/IR Image Processing

Cross-data validation

Regula 1120M automatically cross-checks information captured from the MRZ, VIZ, barcodes, and—if present—RFID chip data to confirm consistency across sources. Built-in format and structure checks help validate that fields match expected document rules, while pattern (mask) verification adds another layer of control to reduce errors and flag suspicious inconsistencies.

White-light checks

Capture clear visible-light images for fast visual inspection and reliable data extraction in mobile workflows. Patterns obtained from the white-light image are compared with the document template.

Infrared сhecks

Infrared-based authenticity checks are available when the paired smartphone is equipped with an IR camera. Regula 1120M supports IR visibility verification: portrait, elements of the form, and text data, as well as MRZ print contrast (IR B900 ink) check.

Ultraviolet checks

The workflow includes UV dull paper checks (for the document form, MRZ, and portrait), security UV fiber luminescence inspection, and reading UV-luminescent invisible text. It also supports UV document image pattern checks to help authenticate additional security features during mobile inspections.

Biometric Identification

Face matching

Face matching

Regula 1120M supports mobile identity verification with Regula Face Matching SDK, comparing a live photo captured with the smartphone with the facial images available from the document. Document typically includes the printed portraits (main and ghost) and — if present — the portrait stored in the document RFID chip and barcode.

Fingerprint scanning

Fingerprint scanning

Regula 1120M can be extended with an optional fingerprint module to capture high-quality fingerprint scans as part of a unified mobile identity check. Where supported by the document and workflow, fingerprint information stored on the document’s RFID chip can also be extracted.

Extended Capabilities of Regula 1120M

Universal Smartphone Compatibility

Works with smartphones already approved in your organization, so you can deploy mobile verification without changing device policies or procurement rules.

Integration with Regula IDV Platform

Regula 1120M can connect with the Regula IDV Platform to support centralized identity lifecycle management and smooth integration with your existing IT systems and workflows.

Extended Autonomy in the Field

Regula 1120M includes a built-in battery to deliver longer runtime and reliable performance wherever verification is needed. It can also be recharged via a smartphone.
