Detect ID Forgery by Decoding Personal Data

MRZ checks are applicable not only while crossing borders: they are indispensable in case of remote onboarding, in KYC scenarios, and for fraud prevention purposes. However, MRZ data is only trustworthy when verified, not just extracted. And that is exactly what Regula does.

Our technology employs over 200 parsers for various MRZ codes. Thanks to this, the MRZ lines are automatically divided into separate fields and each field is properly validated, including the data it contains, such as name, date of birth, country code, document number, expiry date, etc. Our technology ensures that all the information is relevant and valid, e.g., document numbers don’t look like a line of zeros (which is typical for ID specimens), the issuing country or nationality codes are real instead of UTO (which are used just for ‘technical’ filling-in), and so on.

Moreover, we verify MRZ checksums to prove the authenticity of a document. Such scrupulous checks allow you to easily spot fake IDs and fight fraud at early stages, as even the most sophisticated fakes are often made with errors that we can detect. These are just a few examples, as Regula MRZ reading technology is capable of much more, thanks to deep document analysis backed up by a mix of advanced in-house forensic equipment and rare industry expertise.

This trustworthiness goes together with high quality and ease of use. There's no need to position the document’s MRZ accurately and precisely in front of the camera. The passport can be tilted or turned upside down: as soon as the document’s MRZ gets in the camera view, the personal data is automatically recognized, processed, and verified.

Instant Reading and Verification of MRZ

Regula MRZ reading technology automatically reads the MRZ lines, dividing them into separate fields, and validates MRZs with all the data they contain in accordance with ICAO 9303 and ISO 18013 standards.

Widely Used and Useful

MRZ formats vary a lot depending on the document type and issuing country. The most common are as follows:

  • Passports: TD3 size (2 lines, 44 characters)

  • ID cards: TD1 (3 lines, 30 characters) and TD2 size (2 lines, 36 characters)

  • Visas: MRVA (2 lines, 44 characters) and MRVB (2 lines, 36 characters)

  • Driver’s licenses: 1-line MRZ, 30 characters

And Regula technology successfully reads them all in no time.

MRZs encode vital personal information, such as:

  • Document type code

  • Issuing country

  • Full name

  • Document number

  • Date of birth, nationality, sex

  • Document expiration date

  • Variable elements (personal number or other data specific to a country)
